African Death's Head Hawk Moth Caterpillar

I found this caterpillar at night in Madagascar. The adults of these hawk moths (also known as sphinx moths) are famous for their appearance in the film "Silence of the Lambs," but the caterpillars are spectacular on their own. I liked that the spines on the caterpillar are echoed by the thorns on the vine.
