Flame Skimmer Dragonfly Forewing

I never harm insects to photograph them, but when I found a recently-dead dragonfly in my backyard I decided to make an image of the wing. I lit the wing from behind and in front with diffused flash, through white diffusion material, to overexpose everything but the wonderfully complex venation. The elongated orange rectangle on the upper end of the wing is called a "pterostigma." This thickened and pigmented area adds rigidity to the wingtip, helping with gliding.
