Megacyllene robiniae)
Locust Borer
These insects get their name because their larvae are a destructive pest that exclusively infests the black locust tree. While the larvae tunnel through and weaken tree trunks, the harmless adult beetles emerge in late summer (usually August through September) to feed on the nectar and pollen of Goldenrod blossoms. Because of their warning colors, people often mistake them for stinging wasps or hornets.
